Sun Tunnels: Iconic Land Art in the Utah Desert

An artistic landmark where light, landscape, and human vision converge.
Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels is a testament to vision, persistence, and the relationship between art and the landscape. Filming this tribute, I was struck by the scale of her ambition. Four massive concrete cylinders, precisely aligned with the sun’s solstices, standing in the middle of Utah’s Great Basin Desert. It’s a piece that demands patience, both in its construction and in the way it interacts with time and light.
For me, this project was more than just documenting a work of art. I originally went to the University of Utah planning to build large-scale 3D art installations myself, so being part of a film honoring Holt felt like a full-circle moment. Contributing my photographic work to this memoir, produced by the Holt/Smithson Foundation, was both an honor and a reminder of why I fell in love with art in the first place—the ability to shape space, to play with light, and to create something that outlasts us.
