The Jingle Dress project

Healing and empowerment through cultural traditions.

Some projects stick with you long after the filming is done. Art Heals: The Jingle Dress Project is one of those. Fine arts photographer Eugene Tapahe first envisioned this project in a dream. a vision deeply rooted in the Ojibwe legend of the jingle dress dance, which was said to bring healing during the Spanish Flu. A century later, in the wake of modern hardships, Eugene saw an opportunity to revive that healing spirit.

Traveling across the West, he photographs his daughters and friends dancing in jingle dresses against the backdrop of National Parks and Monuments—reclaiming indigenous spaces, honoring ancestors, and sharing the resilience of Native culture. Watching the dancers move, hearing the rhythmic chime of the metal cones, and witnessing Eugene’s passion for this project was powerful.
